Lake Connections is your friendly local fiber-optic broadband provider.
A self-sustaining business owned by Lake County, we are working to bring High-Speed Internet, Digital TV, and Voice services to Lake County and eastern St. Louis County in northeastern Minnesota. This will give rural residents the same access as those living in towns and cities.
Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2010. The Act includes the Broadband Initiatives Program, under which federally funded grants and low-interest loans are available to help provide High-Speed Internet to areas without it. Lake County has the distinction of receiving one of the largest broadband awards in the country at $66.5 million.
This funding is designated for constructing the fiber-optic network (not for providing free services). About $10 million of the award is an outright grant; the rest is a low-interest loan. Lake County itself is investing $3.5 million in the project – a remarkably small amount given the scope of the project and long-term benefits it will bring.
Thanks to Lake Connections, starting in 2014, residents of Lake County and eastern St. Louis County will be able to purchase High-Speed Internet, Digital TV, and Voice services at competitive rates.
